Hydrangea is a genus of flowering plants that includes a diverse range of species and cultivars. These plants are known for their large, showy flower heads and are popular choices for gardens and landscaping.

Flowers: The most distinctive feature of Hydrangea plants is their beautiful and abundant flowers. The flowers are typically large and composed of small individual florets. They can vary in colour, including shades of white, pink, purple, blue, and even green, depending on the specific variety and soil pH. Some species and cultivars produce flowers that change colour as they age.

Leaf Structure: Hydrangea leaves are usually large, oval-shaped, and arranged in an opposite pattern along the stems. The leaves have prominent veins and a serrated or toothed edge. They can be dark green or have a reddish or bronze tint, depending on the variety.

Growth Habit: Hydrangeas can be either deciduous or evergreen, depending on the species. They can grow as shrubs or small trees, with some varieties reaching heights of several meters. The growth habit can vary from compact and rounded to more open and spreading.

Soil and Light Requirements: Hydrangeas generally prefer well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. They thrive in partial shade to full sun, although some varieties are more tolerant of shade than others. The specific light and soil requirements can vary depending on the species and cultivar.

Hydrangea Macrophylla and Hydrangea Paniculata: These two species are among the most commonly cultivated hydrangeas. Hydrangea macrophylla, also known as bigleaf hydrangea or mophead hydrangea, is known for its large, rounded flower heads and its ability to change flower colour based on soil pH. Hydrangea paniculata, also called panicle hydrangea, has elongated, conical flower clusters and is often more tolerant of sun and heat.

Pruning: Pruning hydrangeas is important to maintain their shape, promote new growth, and control their size. However, different species and varieties have different pruning requirements, so it's essential to understand the specific needs of the hydrangea you are growing.

Uses: Hydrangeas are versatile plants that can be used in various ways in the garden, such as foundation plantings, hedges, borders, or as potted plants. They are also popular cut flowers and can be dried for decorative purposes.

Considerations: It's worth noting that some hydrangea varieties may require special care, such as adjusting soil pH to influence flower colour or protecting them from harsh winter conditions.
